Code 46

Just finished watching the movie Code 46 starring Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton. Kind of an interesting movie, if a little slow at time. It reminded me a little bit of Gattaca with its themes of genetics and the future. The movie provides one glimpse of the future - bleak, desert areas, insiders vs. outsiders, and where everyday aspect of life is controlled by a totalitarian government, but what I thought was really interesting was the language aspect of the film. The writers interspersed several languages together in everyday language. A baby boy or girl was referred to as 'chica' or 'chico', yes is 'si', hello is 'hola', etc. Even when the characters were in Shanghai, neither Chinese nor English was the only language spoken in the same sentence. I thought that was an interesting glimpse into the future. The genetic story-line which dealt with cloning and incompatibility and controlling procreation also gave the film an intriguing aspect.

It's definitely worth renting, if you're in the mood to be thought-provoked.
